Abstract
Social media microlearning has emerged as an effective approach to medical education, offering concise, accessible educational content tailored to the needs of busy healthcare providers, including hematologists. Such strategies, using platforms like Twitter, Instagram and Facebook, can improve learner engagement, knowledge retention, and clinical confidence through case-based and interactive formats. Specifically, social media enhances learning through spaced repetition, repeatedly exposing users to educational content over time, and provides immediate feedback. However, very few hematology-focused initiatives have systematically used these tools to support ongoing professional development. On March 1st, 2025, we launched #ASHEducation, an education channel across Bluesky, Facebook, Instagram, and LinkedIn, designed to deliver innovative, bite-sized hematology learning experiences. Grounded in evidence that supports microlearning's positive impact on educational outcomes, our channel aims to empower hematologists with the latest research, practical insights and best-practices, fostering continuous professional growth, which will ultimately enhance patient care. #ASHEducation features 4 weekly campaigns, #ASHTriviaTuesday, #ASHWomenWednesday, #ASHSlideSaturday, and #HemeTalks, delivered as interactive carousel posts. The #ASHTriviaTuesday campaign features a retired question from the NBME Hematology In-Service Exam, featuring a patient history, physical exam, labs, a multiple-choice question, an answer, and its rationale. The #ASHWomenWednesday posts educate the audience on hematology-related diseases and disorders that primarily or disproportionately impact women worldwide. The carousel post features facts about the disease followed by multiple-choice question, an answer, and its rationale. The #ASHSlideSaturday posts contain high quality, peer-reviewed hematologic images that are suitable for learners at all career stages. The answer is released on Sunday. Lastly, #HemeTalks is our monthly podcast that aims to support educational needs of community hematologists, advanced practice providers, and trainees through engaging, case-based discussions and provide practical clinical strategies and pragmatic approaches to patient care. We systematically tracked followers, impressions, engagement and engagement rates using Sprout Social. Within four months, the channel has reached 3,144 organic followers, with 729,557 impressions, 28,074 post engagements,10,894 post link clicks, and a robust engagement rate of 3.8%. Building on this early engagement and supported by the documented success of microlearning modalities in medical education, we plan to expand our content to include animated and real-time short videos, clinical guidelines, and professional development resources for medical students and residents considering a career in hematology. Early data suggest strong engagement and a growing appetite for bite-sized, clinically relevant content. Ongoing evaluation will continue to assess impact, contributing to the growing evidence base for social media in hematology education.
