Table 1 shows the theoretical number of starting cells, megakaryocytes, and tissue culture plates needed for the ex vivo generation of platelets for transfusion purposes.

These calculations are for what would be required in an ex vivo system if we could generate the number of platelets per megakaryocyte listed in the “Platelets/MK” column.

These calculations show how many culture plates (assuming 1 × 106 megakaryocytes per plate) would be required, given the number of cells generated, to generate 1 platelet transfusion (3 × 1011 platelets).
